MACCABIAH BRIDGE DISASTER VICTIMS FINALLY RECEIVE BALANCE OF LOAN FUNDS AFTER PRESSURE
Press Release 6th October 1999
The victims most affected by the Maccabiah Bridge Disaster which occurred on 14 July 1999 are pleased to note that after numerous demands and threats of legal action upon Maccabi World Union (MWU) for not honouring the loan fund pledge originally made by MWU to the victims in September 1997, that the balance outstanding, being two thirds of the promise, has finally arrived in Australia.
Commenting from Sydney, spokesperson for the victims, Colin Elterman stated: "We are of course delighted that the much needed loan funds have at last arrived. We have been waiting for over two years for MWU to honour this commitment. Had we not publicly criticised MWU for MWU firstly asking us to limit its liability and that of its insurers to the amount of monies loaned and then raising all sorts of excuses for delays, we would never have received the moneys. These funds are of course helpful, but no substitute for proper compensation.
The victims again call upon MWU to follow the lead of the State of Israel and at least assume moral responsibility and properly account for its role
in the Disaster. We cannot understand why MWU and its insurers are dragging us through the legal system in Israel.
We also reaffirm our call for the President and Chairman of MWU to stand down so that a proper and thorough revamp of MWU may occur".
