TOGETHER AS ONE
by Nora ElkmanSeptember 1997
The Jewish New Year 5758 is approaching and a group of Melbourne women have come together with the aim to unite Jewish women worldwide.
As we are lighting our candles to usher in the New Year 5758, let us plead to G-d to bring about a complete peace and the end of bloodshed and suffering to the Jews of Israel.
Jewish women lighting their candles all around the world, adding their own special prayer for peace, is a very powerful image. One can imagine the beautiful mosaic of spiritual light created by our physical lighting of the candles and our prayers at this time.
Additionally, our sages teach us that the time of lighting Shabbat and Festival candles is a special one when the gates of heaven are open. Let us make use of this extra special spiritual time to pray for peace in Israel.
At your local time, 18 minutes before sunset on Wednesday 1st October and after nightfall on Thursday 2nd October, let us unite in thought and deed by lighting our candles and reciting the customary blessings:
1. Baruth ata Ah-do-nai, Elo-heinu melech ha-olam asher kidshanu be-mitzvotav ve-tzivanu le-hadlik ner shel yom tov. Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of the festival.
2. Baruth ata Ah-do-nai, Elo-heinu melech ha-olam she-he-chiyanu ve-kiyamanu ve-higianu lazman hazeh.
Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this occasion.
After these blessings add your own special prayer through words, thoughts or meditation for a complete peace in the Land of Israel.
Shana Tovah and a year of peace and blessings.
